Eco Embroidery Studio LLC
The People Behind the Embroidery
Eco Embroidery Studio LLC located in the Village West Plaza was started by Karen Whelan. Karen Whelan is an Erie Native, she grew up in Erie, attended Harbor Creek High School, Majored in Business at Dyke Business College in Cleveland, OH. She started Sewing at a young age which she inherited from her Grandmother. She was a seamstress for multiple years making wedding gowns and men's suits. She left Erie with Her Husband Art, her 4 Sons, Matt, Josh, Ken and Sean in 1989 and ended up in St. Louis, MO. After moving to St. Louis, she started taking numerous sewing classes learning as much as humanly possible about sewing.
She earned a certification in Pattern Making at Washington University of St. Louis. In 1995, She pursued a career out of sewing in which became embroidery. The Name of the business was Hare N There Embroidery. She became Incorporated in 1998 after researching the industry and finding out that using her sewing skills would help her embroidery. After Multiple Sew outs and tests, Karen found out there wasn't much she couldn't embroider mainly due to the expertise of her sewing skills. Karen's business grew rapidly with businesses mainly because of the quality of work, excellent customer service skills, and the quality of digitized logos. Karen had a soft spot with the community when school, organizations and companies would come to her asking for Donations due to her quality of embroidery and was asked repeatedly when word came out about her business and satisfaction to customers for the Large Donations people were receiving to wherever she was donating. Linda Vista Montessori School, Crestview Jr. High, Wild Horse Elementary and The Legends Country Club, just to name a few.
In 2001 Karen returned to Erie, PA with her husband Art and Son Sean. After being involved in a few odd jobs, she realized how much she missed embroidery and decided to re invent her ideas and seek out for a possible position in Embroidery without having to open a business. Karen inquired to all the local so-called embroidery places and came to find out, Erie has no real Embroidery retail shop. Erie also needed a quality embroider and professional digitized logos. Karen being an environmentally friendly person, she observed that not one business locally was using any kind of Eco-friendly threads or offering Eco-Friendly Products. In November 2009, Karen created Eco Embroidery Studio LLC, the only Eco-friendly product supply embroidery business. She decided to carry a wide variety for those who want to be Eco Friendly in their products and for those who dont. Her Products, Supplies and Materials are all Eco Friendly and everytime you wear her product she created for you, you were helping out the environment. All it takes is a little change to make a big difference or impact, notice the GOING GREEN slogan.
What Separates her company more than any others? Simple answer, she has thousands of designs on hand to choose from, she uses quality Eco- Friendly threads, quality soft backings, professional digitized logos, name brand apparel for everyone's budget, Eco-Friendly Apparel, quality linens, baby items, stuffed animals and many other items too numerous to mention. On a final note, Karen never stops brain storming for new ideas. Recently she has created a line of Handbags called "Pursenality". They are handmade cotton handbags made with a printed material which has coordinating embroidery accented with swvarorski crystals or glass beads and metal handles. After selling a few of handbags that customer's requested at a custom expense she decided to give them more exposure.

The Embroidery
Brief History:
Art of decorating textiles with needle and thread. Among the basic techniques are cross-stitch, crewel work, and quilting. The Persians and Greeks wore quilted garments as armor. The earliest surviving examples of embroidery are Scythian (c. 5th – 3rd century BC). The most notable extant Chinese examples are the imperial silk robes of the Qing dynasty (1644 – 1911/12). Islamic embroideries (16th – 17th century) show stylized geometric patterns based on animal and plant shapes. Northern European embroidery was mostly ecclesiastical until the Renaissance. European skills and conventions prevailed in North America in the 17th – 18th century. The Native Americans embroidered skins and bark with dyed porcupine quills; later the beads they acquired in trade took the place of quills. The indigenous peoples of Central America produced a kind of embroidery with feathers. The Bayeux Tapestry is the most famous surviving piece of needlework.
